The ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQUS)

EQUS is the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems.  Our mission is to engineer the quantum future by building quantum machines that harness the quantum world for practical applications.  

The ARC Centre of Excellent for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav)

The mission of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) is to capitalise on the historic first detections of gravitational waves to understand the extreme physics of black holes and warped spacetime, and to inspire the next generation of Australian scientists and engineers through this new window on the Universe.

Quantum Technologies and Dark Matter

Research excellence in precision measurement and sensing, low temperature physics,
hybrid quantum systems and laboratory tests of fundamental physics.

This lab build instruments with world-class precision and performance, that can be used to make measurements of high value and interest in both fundamental physics and more practical applications.

Atomic Clock Lab

One of the most precise tools devised by humankind is the optical atomic clock, one of which is under development here at UWA. Such clocks can test numerous aspects of physics, e.g. the constancy of fundamental constants, the isotropy of space and general relativistic effects. More recently, they have been used to search for Dark Matter transients and Dark Matter force mediators.

Condensed Matter and Magnetism Research Group

Our group carries out experimental, theoretical and computational research in the fields of Condensed-Matter Physics (CMP) and Magnetism. CMP is the largest research field in Physics, with one third of all American physicists self-identifying as condensed-matter physicists, and the Division of Condensed-Matter Physics being the largest division of the American Physical Society. Magnetism is a very important part of the CMP field. The focus of modern research in this area is magnetic objects with nanometre-range sizes. Results of this research are already around us, for instance, the modern cloud information storage would have been hardly possible without the discovery of the magnetic tunnel junction. Currently we are interested in studying the highly nonlinear physics of eigen-excitations in magnetic solids. These excitations are called magnons. We are looking for ways to build magnon-based artificial neurons and whole neural networks. We also trying to propose magnonic solutions for Quantum Information, Renewable Energy and advanced Bio-medical instrumentation. Students are invited to join our group and contribute to this exciting physical research. We are offering a number of Honours/Masters and PhD projects.
